Introduce Orvin and Kenny, and their daily life.

  • Orvin is Kenny's maternal uncle and caretaker since Kenny's parent died.

Conflicts

Kenny's approach to glassmaking is different to Orvin. Kenny has a flair for the artistic while Orvin is more practical.

What we learn

  • Orvin is a glassmaker
  • Orvin and Aslan (Kenny's father) trained together under master Ismene.
  • Kenny is Orvin's nephew (maternal)
  • Kenny's parent are dead
  • Kenny is living with Orvin
  • Wang is an old man who likes Kenny
  • Wang is eccentric
  • Kenny is a good glassmaker who goes the extra mile with intricate designs.
  • Although Orvin criticises "the waste of time", Orvin is a bit envious, Kenny, like his father, could do something that Orvin seems incapable of doing
  • Orvin and Kenny's dad were rivals

What happened

  • Kenny wants to leave to work for master Ismene

4. Event

1. Beginning (Hook/Setup):

  • Kenny shows his new work to Orvin, the one he's just made for a new customer, Wang

2. Middle (Development/Conflict):

  • Although Orvin thinks Kenny created a durable product, he believes Kenny spends too much time on superficial stuff.
  • Kenny highlights that glasswork shouldn't just be just about the product.
  • Orvin disagreed, and told Kenny that he would never become a master if he doesn't focus on the essential stuff.
  • Kenny took that moment to let Orvin know that someone has decided to sponsor him, help him set up his shop and he's considering it.
  • Orvin is angry that Kenny is planning on leaving him.
  • Kenny assures him that he wouldn't leave unless his uncle accept, but at some point, he needs to go out on his own. Orvin barely makes money from the shop and Kenny needs to move out of his house.
  • Plus, he's been learning about this stuff for years, and thinks it's time for him to move on.

3. End (Resolution/Cliffhanger/Transition):

  • They leave the issue unresolved because Kenny has to deliver the product to Wang.
  • Kenny was a bit angry that Orvin doesn't appreciate him, and a bit sad too
  • Orvin is concerned that Wang has ulterior motives
    • Plus, Orvin needs Kenny, to do some work, otherwise he might have to hire an hand which he can't afford
  • The scene ends with Kenny leaving the shop with the wares that he wants to deliver

5. Dialogue (If Applicable):

Kenny and Orvin

  • It's a conversation between a father figure and son, and the son wants to fly the coup
  • The dialogue creates tension
  • It shows that Kenny could be more talented than Orvin, just like his father
  • Orvin is a bit jealous of Kenny

6. Internal Monologue/Thoughts (If Applicable):

  • Kenny is a lot like his father, Orvin's rival
  • Kenny's father was quite successful and Orvin could not measure up

7. Foreshadowing

Kenny is a maverick, and might be gifted in a way that his father is.
